Charlotte Barkerding Travieso (NC ’64)

Charlotte Barkerding Travieso graduated from the Louise S. McGehee School and from Newcomb College of Tulane University where she received a BS degree in mathematics and was president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. During her junior year, she studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. She later went on to receive her MS with distinction in from American University in organization development.
A native of New Orleans, Travieso was the executive director of the Office of Alumni Affairs at Tulane University and executive director of the Tulane University Alumni Association for 12 years before retiring in 2012.
She lived in Washington, DC for 36 years working as a mathematician for the National Security Agency and as a computer specialist in the private sector and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before returning to New Orleans in 2000, she had a private practice as a management consultant.
An enthusiastic traveler, she has visited all seven continents, 95 countries (at last count), and 49 states, climbing Gokyo Ri in Nepal and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. She has completed seven marathons.
She was president of the Tulane Alumni Association Board of Directors and received its volunteer of the year award. She was a member and president of the McGehee School Board of Trustees and received its distinguished alumna award in 1991. She is a member of the Krewe of Muses, Les Causeries du Lundi, Le Petit Salon, the Preservation Resource Center and Great Old Broads for Wilderness. She is a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument, the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of African American Culture and History, all in Washington.
She sang bass with Shades of Praise: New Orleans Interracial Gospel Choir and served as its president and event scheduler. She reads for WRBH (88.3 FM) radio, and records books for taped playback. In 2016 she taped Les Miserables (the entire thing)!
She was a contestant on Jeopardy! and says it was the most nervous she has ever been in her entire life.
She loves Tulane baseball and hopes for a return to Omaha.
She enjoys exercise, reading and travel.
